Vitalik Buterin: Future lotteries could benefit from ETH 2.0’s randomness

In discussing the Ethereum (ETH) hackathon in association with the Colorado State Lottery, Vitalik Buterin, was of the opinion that in the future, such lotteries could benefit from the Ethereum 2.0 Verifiable Delay Function.

Users can withdraw their Ether from the ‚Smart Contracts‘ HodlEthereum

There is no immediate use for Ethereum in the project
The creator of the Ethereum will be one of the guests at the virtual opening ceremony of the Colorado State Lottery Game, Jam Hackathon. Jared Polis and Chainlink co-founder Sergey Nazarov will also be present. Buterin does not believe that the Colorado Lottery will immediately begin using the Ethereum blockchain for its gaming, but suspects that similar applications may use ETH 2.0’s randomization features in the future:

„I understand that there is not really an Ethereum link to the lottery itself; rather, it is part of the Jared Polis administration’s efforts to seek innovative approaches to financing public goods and modernizing government. I believe that potentially, in the future, applications like these could benefit from the randomness of Ethereum 2.0 when we add the VDF!“

Chainlink believes that its verifiable randomness function, or VRF, also has a lot of potential for the gaming industry. In the future, this could be a source of competition between decentralised ecosystems.

Chainlink partners with the state of Colorado to help create a new lottery game

Discussing the overlap of the association with Ethereum’s fifth birthday, Buterin said:

„I think it’s a coincidence! I don’t think the state of Colorado is making decisions based on Ethereum dates yet…“

There is no state-by-state competition between Ethereum and Cardano
Colorado’s neighboring state, Wyoming, is perhaps the most cryptomone-friendly state in the United States. Apparently it has also been conquered by Ethereum’s competitor, Cardano (ADA), as they project the local territory as their home. Cardano’s development company, IOHK, moved its legal headquarters from Hong Kong to Wyoming when the state passed its cryptosystem-friendly legislation. Cardano also has close ties to the University of Wyoming and several local businesses. Ironically, Cardano’s founder and co-founder of Ethereum, Charles Hoskinson lives in Boulder, Colorado. We asked Buterin, if Ethereum was trying to conquer Colorado, what he said:

„I really don’t like to think in terms of ‚this state is our territory, this other state is your territory‘. Certainly, there’s a very strong Bitcoin Code presence in Colorado, but overall, Colorado has smart people, they’ll use technology that makes sense to them, and I’m sure Ethereum will prove valuable in many places.

NEAR integrates Chainlink data oracles
It will be interesting to see how blockchain technology is used outside its usual environment in the future. If it can help the Lottery reach its $1 billion revenue goal, it could mean big things for the proliferation of Blockchain.
