Organise Your Own

We are always thrilled when our supporters organise fundraising events on behalf of the AKU Society. Not only does it raise vital funding, but it helps spread awareness of the condition and our work. There are so many different ways you can raise money and if you need a little inspiration we have put together some resources to help you!

Garrod Day and Rare Disease Day

There are two significant dates in the AKU calendar which you may want to celebrate by hosting your own fundraising event. Garrod Day, on the 25th November, marks the birthday of Sir Archiband Garrod who discovered AKU back in 1901. You can find out more about him by visiting our History of AKU page. Each year we ask our supporters to host a ‘Garrod Day Coffee Morning to commemorate the day, but you are welcome to host any event you can think of. Secondly, on the last day of February we commemorate Rare Disease Day, this is another fantastic opportunity to fundraise for AKU.

Schools and Universities

If you are representing a school or university we would love to hear from you.  We have plenty of fundraising resources we can send to make your event go off with a bang, including information leaflets, stickers, collection boxes, T-shirts and posters. We are also able to offer for an AKU representative to speak at your event to raise awareness of the condition and the AKU Society.

Many schools celebrate ‘Jeans for Genes’ day in September so why not put the AKU Society forward to be their chosen charity. Other popular ideas for schools include non-uniform days, cake sales, discos, talent evenings, raffles and car washes.

Most colleges and universities have a fundraising society, often called RAG (Raising and Giving), which give money away either through application, presentation or recommendation. Why not approach your local university, via website, email or telephone, and ask how the AKU Society can be considered for donation.
